Hi,

How can we estimate planning?

Example:
I start a new project and I want to estimate how many days it will take and see its Gantt planning, without taking into account a particular person availability.

Even if I add validated work, if I don't assign someone to a task with a specific number of days, planning calculation go crazy by putting every tasks without assignment at today date (even if it doesn't respect dependencies).

Sorry if already asked, couldn't find keywords…

Thanks,

You can have several ways to solve your use case.

One (IMO the worst) is to defined your tasks as fixed duration tasks.
You can then have a good "draw" of your planning.

Another (my prefered) is to define a virtual resource with capacity = number of expected resources in the team.
Then you assign all the work to this resource : you'll then easily get a correct planning (or at least as correct as possible, as you don't take into account individual competencies). Another good point to thios method is that you can easily simulate adding a resourc e to the team : just change capacity of resource and plan again.
To get an even more realistic planning, you can apply this mtehod with several resources, on for each functions. For instance, if your team will be 1 project leader, 2 analysts and 4 developer, just create 3 resources : PL (capacity 1), ANALYT (capacity 2) and DEV (capacity 4).
