Is this only appearing with V2.4 or is it also produced on V2.3 ?

What is the symmptom ? What really appens ?
- Firefox closes ?
- Firefox freezes ?
- Any error message ? Any log in FireFox ?

Could you try ti check if this appears only for some machines or for some users ?
- identify one machine (M1) that does not crash for user U1
- identify one machine (M2) that does not crash for user U2
- try with U1 on M2 and U2 on M1

- I have tried (my account been wiorking) on machine where it crash - it crash for me as well
- User from machine where it crash - on my machine -> crash and after that I try again ->crash even after cache cleaning...

Do you have Firebug installed over FireFox ?
I found some possible issue with Dojo 1.7 when Firebug is installed.
Could you test on a Firefox without Firebug ?

Other point : what is the expected number of lines to be dispayed when Firefox crashes ?

Refering to Firefox doc in mozillazine ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes) crashes may be due to some extensions.
Could you please tests in safe mode as described.

Start in Firefox Safe Mode and click "Continue in Safe Mode". This will help determine if an extension is causing the problem, since Safe Mode disables all extensions.

- Firebug - on some machines, we cannot find any relation so far...happening on machines with and without it

- yes, we have tried in safe mode - no relation found. Can crash in safe mode as well

Some more info:
When running in safe mode we cannot get the browser to crash.
However, when running the browser with all addons manually disabled the browser still crashes. Therefore I don’t believe addons are causing the problem.

When in safe mode, although the browser doesn’t crash when loading real work allocation, it does lockup and we get a "program not responding" label at the top of the window for a few seconds.

I think lock up and crash could be caused by the javscript animation that is fading the pane in and out. Is there a way of disabling the animation?

Yes the animation can easily be disabled : in the parameters.php file, change

$paramFadeLoadingMode = 'true';

to

$paramFadeLoadingMode = 'false';

Then you must close the application (or refresh with [F5]) to have changes appear.

It hasn't fixed the issue.
The animation is definitely disabled but firefox still crashes when loading that page.

I tried to reproduce on my config but could not reproduce.
My config is Win XP SP3 / Firefox V14.0.1 (with firebug) / running on Core i5 - 3Gb RAM

What is (are) your configuration(s) ?

We generally using Windows 7, Firefox V14.0.1, i5 core as well, 4Gb RAM, some people on Linux using Firefox V14.0.1 as well. Crashes happening on both - Windows 7 and Linux. Looking more like Firefox issue (we have reported it)

No, most of the people have quite a big lists, definitely bigger then 10 lines

Sure there is a FireFox issue : no javascript code could explain a browser crash.
But maybe some workaround could be found outside Firefox.
Still investigating. I'll try on Win 7.

probably from 20 to 100

I just tested with display of 100 lines for 1 resource : no crash.

I'm almost sure it is related to some extension.
Could you please list the extension installed on a firefox that crashes ?
I'd like to try and install them one by one, testing between each installation.

It is not related to extensions because it crashes without any of them as well...

Does it crash with extention not installed ?
As you noticed it does not crash in safe mode, I think issue is on this side.
Even disabling extentions is not enough.
I had some case where an extension installed but disabled produced some unexpected behaviour.

It is still crashing even when extensions not installed - just had a fresh machine to test. I am getting more and more complains about it. This MUST be fixed ASAP!!!

Unfortunately this is not an applicative bug, and my own tests did not produce the issue (with 100 lines displayed).
The only solution could be to limit displayed lines ...

The only workaround today can be :
- try to avoid display of more than 50 lines
- use another browser (Chrome works fine, and exists as a portable application)

We are talking about using tool as the main tool in development process and now with all this complains it is quite questionable I would say.
People also said that in IE it is loading extremely slow.

Yes, up to IE8 it is a mess. IE9 does better.

I think that at some point you have started to use some features that Firefox not supporting - this is where problem started.

No specific feature is used. Moreover, I never could produce your issue using Firefox on my side.I will not be able to fix an issue I can not produce. That's why I requested the list of extensions you use, to try and reproduce and have a clue. But now you tell me you produce the issue without any extension, I don't know how I can help you.
Devs use Dojo framework to get cross-browser compatibility. I just checked Dojo site : new version ( V1.8 ) has been deployed. I will check changelogs to see if some fixing may concern your issue, and I plan to deploy this new version with V2.5, but there is no clue it can help on this issue.

I'd also be glad to have users feedback . Please post you freedback here, and any clue on production of the issue will help solve it.

I don't think issue is on server side (but I may be wrong), I guess it is on browser side.

I have some good news about this issue : it seems a solution exists 🙂

Let me tell you how I proceded :

Having spent some time on Dojo forums, I suspected something with Firebug extension, or with Dojo Firebug extension (some Firefox crash issues were reported about these extensions when using dojo).

1) I first tested on FireFox, on Project'Or RIA V2.4, with a Big (very big) database :
- 1000 projects,
- 10000 activities,
- 500 resources,
- about 30 assignements to activities per resource.
I tested on Firefox, but could not have it crash (but now I'm not sure any more to have executed the "dangerous" sequence).

2) Then I installed Firebug extension and tested again : after fews tests, I had a FF crash :evil:.
So I could produce the issue ! :woohoo:
I tried to determine a test sequence to reproduce the crash, and found one easy :
- open Project'Or RIA,
- select real work allocation (all is OK to now :whistle:),
- select project list ( :whistle: ),
- select real work allocation again : crash 👿 .
This sequence is systematically leading to FF crash.

3) I deactivated Firebug extension, and tested again:
- real work : OK :whistle:
- project list : OK :whistle:
- real work : OK :huh:
- project list : OK :silly:
- real work : CRASH 👿
So I got the crash, but later.
I had several tests, with firebug deactivated, crash is randomly apearing and relatively frequent, but much less than when it is activated.

4) Then I decided to uninstall Firebug extension and test again.
Test = crashing again, the same way it crashed with the extension installed but deactivated. :silly:

5) So I got back to Dojo and installed new Dojo 1.8 on ongoing V2.5.
- real work : OK :whistle:
- project list : OK :whistle:
- real work : OK :huh:
- project list : OK :unsure:
- real work : OK :unsure:
- and continued more than 10 times without any issue :woohoo:

6) Facing this good improvement, I got to silly test : I reinstalled Firebug, activated it, and tested again.
I could not reproduce the crash.
I tested for some time, withouit any issue, even if I activate Firebug UI. 🙂

So I think Dojo 1.8 fixes some issue with FireFox, even if I could not find explicit fixing described in the Dojo bug tracker.

I will deploy V2.5 with Dojo 1.8 soon.
The V2.5 developments are late, so I will report all the functional upgrades planned on this version to another version to have a quick deployment of this fixing.
I first have to spend some time on testing as new Dojo version often brings few regressions.
This will make this version a pure technical improvement.
