When a project was created and canceled due to whatever reason, the only way for users which I found was to cancel every single activity, etc. one by one and then the sub-projects and finally the project itself. Because otherwise it complained by changing the state that there are still open tasks.

You can cancel many activities in one step with "multiple update" mode.
