The number of items is displayed overlaid on the icon at the top of the dual screen.
It would be really helpful to see this number on the menu too.

Ticket (12)
Activities (132)
Milestones (4)
Actions (76)
and throughout the menus.
What would be even better is the number to finish (status configurable?) out the total was also available...

The exact format is up for debate.
Even it may be an interesting idea, the performance issues it may bring force us to reject the request.
1) We would have to count lines in every table before start (>150 tables, and some users have thouthands of lines...)
2) The figures displayed would be false as soon as they are displayed. As long as other users may add or remove data, we would have to ass an upgrade process that could highly impact performance.
I see it as well as an interesting idea.
From my pov, I would not mix information of elements with control elements to keep the tool most simple.
I agree as well to the performance argument.
