Hello,
when you use accelerator for workflow, help popup give you information like "set status to ..." that's not a great help because you can read the same on the accelerator button.
What about using a field in status to explain the sense of status (like "validate budget usage for the expense") that is used to help user when using accelerator ?
Then, you will have "validate budget usage for the expense" in the popup instead of "set status to validated", that is more explicit.
Expect to be clear.

1) On status screen : add "description" feld
2) On "next status" button (button on right of status list), show descrition in tooltip (instead of "set to status xxx")
